Crossing the Continental Divide at 8391 feet. Yellowstone Park lies within an immense volcanic plateau which has evolved through three cycles of voluminous outpourings of rhyolite lava and ash, each climaxing in a caldera collapse, and one of Earth's greatest pyroclastic eruptions.
