The rugged lava fields form a natural barrier, and native American and later settlers had to circumvent the lava fields. Pronghorn, which are neither deer nor antelope, have only a narrow migration corridor, in places only a few hundred yards wide, between the Craters of the Moon lava fields and the foothills of the Pioneer Mountains.
