Shoshone Falls flows over a 6 million year old rhyolitic layer which is more resistant than the surrounding basalt of the Snake River Plain. Volcanism of the Snake River Plain in general is related to the motion of the North American Plate over the hot spot currently located at Yellowstone National Park, the rhyolitic layers record the most violent eruptive events.
