Our last stop is Pu‘uhonua o Hōnaunau National Historic Park, former home of ali‘i (noble chiefs). Separated by a massive stone wall (ca 1550) is a sanctuary for defeated warriors, noncombatants, and violators of kapu, the sacred laws. The temples were destroyed or abandoned in 1819 when traditional religious practices were abolished.
