Day 7. The final day. After loading the vans and checking out from KMC, we still have most of the day for geology. A short hike into the Ka‘ū Desert gives a view of Mauna Loa's great shield. The lack of vegetation is due to the rain shadow and to the acid rain downwind from the Halema‘uma‘u vent.
