In the morning I take US-50 to CA-89, following the shore of Lake Tahoe, the largest alpine lake in North America. At 501 m depth, it is the second deepest in the United States after Crater Lake. Fannette Island in Emerald Bay, is its only island. The remains of "Tea House", constructed by the owner of Vikingsholm, Mrs. Lora J. Knight, are visible on the summit. Vikingsholm is an elaborate Scandinavian-style mansion on the shore of Emerald Bay, constructed in 1929 as a summer home for Mrs. Knight.
