Stony Man. The "face" on the skyline is the expression of five tilted Cambrian Catoctin Formation basalt (now greenstone) lava flows. These dip gently to the left, and lie unconformably above the Precambrian basement. The unconformity is about midway up the photograph on the right skyline. Here the Blue Ridge thrust sheet includes these flows (Badger 1999).
