Along the Sonoma coast, large blocks, or "knockers" of blueschist and eclogite erode out of the soft matrix of the Franciscan melange. This melange is the remains of the Mesozoic subduction zone that gave rise to the great Sierra Nevada batholith, the focus of last summer's adventure.
