John Muir Trail 2013

This black bear (Ursus americanus) was digging through rotting logs looking for grubs. Camp 1 is made on Sunset Creek, just past the Clouds Rest Trail junction. This was a short first day, and miles would have to be made up on subsequent days, but with 3400 feet of elevation gain, and having done no training prior to the trip, I was done for the day. Luckily, no bears came foraging for backpacker food that evening.
